Hey there students and advisors of Area 7! My name is Ashley Thompson, your Student Advisory Committee leader. I am so excited to be representing all the great peer education programs in Area 7!

Just some info about me: I am a senior studying pre-public health at Bowling Green State University. I am a member of our peer education programs, HYPE (Healthier You Peer Education) and SAIN (Sexual Assault Information Network). Also, I am involved with Bacchus Gamma, our healthy lifestyles student organization at BGSU.
Enough about me, more about YOU! The students!

As SAC, my main goal is to serve the students of Area 7! Feel free to email, facebook, or contact me anyway with ideas or input you have. A great outlet for all of us to dialogue is right here, in the Area 7 newsletter! I am so excited for the newsletter to help keep everyone in Area 7 connected. I want to stress that this isn't my newsletter--this letter is for the students! To make this connection work I need help! If you would like to write something for the newsletter about a national health issues, programing at your school, or anything else peer education related let me know! I want different students to have a chance to be part of each issue of the newsletter.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can at the Area 7 conference that is being hosted by our friends in Notre Dame! Untill then, good luck with all your programming, and again, I look forward to seeing you all in April!

Stay Connected with Everyone in Area 7

gagirls07You might be asking yourself, how can I stay connected with other students in Area 7? There are actually many of ways to meet and share ideas with other students!

1. Facebook. I know you have one, so why not use it to improve your peer education program? There is The BACCHUS Network facebook group you can join. On the home page of facebook just search The BACCHUS Network and the group will come up. Join and post on the disscusion boards! Its a great way to communicate with other students. Also, all the SAC, including myself, are members so feel free to friend us or send us messages.

2. The BACCHUS Network Web Site. I encourage everyone to check out The BACCHUS Network website, http://www.bacchusnetwork.org. On the website you can also check out our Area 7 page. I hope soon to have pictures from different peer education groups on the page. If you have pictures from events you have done at your school PLEASE send them to me at area7sac@bacchusnetwork.org. I will post them on the site so everyone can see! Also, I want to spotlight peer education groups on the page. Send a roughly 300 word description of your program and I will have that posted, so others in the area can know about your program! Also, on the main page is a disscusion board for all BACCHUS members. I encourage everyone to check that out!

3. Area 7 Newsletter! The newsletter is a great way for students to share ideas with one another! I encourage everyone to send any info they have or want to share with the group about programs they do on campus. I hope to spotlight one program or organziation in Area 7 every issue!

In the end, the more you guys interact through the different channels The BACCHUS Network has made available for us, the better ideas and programs we all will have! Area 7 pride everyone! Let's show it!

Review of General Assembly 2007
sacga2007The 2007 BACCHUS Network General Assembly was held in Atlanta, Georgia November 8th-10th.  Area 7 was represented very well with a variety of schools present, including: Saginaw Valley State University, Bowling Green State University, Miami University, University of Notre Dame, Eastern Kentucky and many others. The conference was a great time for students to network, listen to great speakers, and learn a lot to take back to their own peer education programs.  One of the highlights of the weekend was a great presentation by Area 7's own Judson Laipply, who concluded his presentation with the ever so popular Evolution of Dance.  Some other great presenters included: Andrea Mosby, Rene Hicks, Bi-Polar Boy, Robin Sawyer, and many fellow peer educators from across the United States.  Breakout sessions covered a variety of topics such as alcohol, illicit drugs, safer sex, mental health, nutrition, self-defense, leadership, and athletes.  Everyone seemed to have an awesome time at the conference in the rather chilly "Hot-Lanta", and we also all enjoyed the talking elevators at the hotel!  Next year's GA will be held right here in Area 7!  The 2008 conference, November 13th-16th,  will be held in Columbus, Ohio and we hope to see you all there!

Letter from the Student Trustees
This upcoming spring season is one of renewal, and as an affiliate of The BACCHUS Network, you have opportunities to engage your peer education organization in this rejuvenation. The BACCHUS Network exists to provide resources for peer educators to start and re-energize  activities on hundreds of campuses.

Each spring, The BACCHUS Network hosts twelve area conferences across the country with hundreds in attendance.  Through networking with other peer educators and health professionals, presenting information from your campus experience, and hearing speakers, affiliates have a chance to celebrate their successes as well as strengthen their visions.

Meeting with other peer educators is only one opportunity offered by BACCHUS this spring. Two campus campaigns are now available, free of charge, to all affiliated campus programs. The first-ever national Promoting Mental Health Campaign jumpstarts an entirely new era of wellness promotion, and The Snapshot of a Safe Spring Break materials reflect our continuing tradition of safe and healthy activities during spring break. Each campaign contains not only samples of promotional items for your campaign, but also a booklet of information and ideas that can be tailored to individual campus and peer group situations.

BACCHUS recognizes that your campus is unique, which is why these resources are only the beginning. Take these ideas, and in the spirit of spring, make them grow. In turn, tell us about your peer education program with your charter renewal. This form is your opportunity to express what resources your campus uses, would like to receive, and how you've improved on our designs.

The Student Advisory Committee and Student Trustees extend their best wishes for your success this spring. Indeed, the Student Advisory Committee is simply another resource for your peer education progress, so connect with your SAC representative to find out more regarding what BACCHUS can do for you.

National Health News: Double Dipping could pose real health risk!

chipsCOLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- Keep an eye on the salsa this weekend: A researcher inspired by a famous "Seinfeld" episode has concluded that double dipping is just plain gross.

Double dipping "is like putting your whole mouth right in the dip," a Clemson University researcher says "That's like putting your whole mouth right in the dip!" George Costanza was admonished on the show after he dipped a chip twice at a wake. That's not too far off, said Clemson University professor Paul L. Dawson.

Last year the food microbiologist's undergraduate students examined the effects of double dipping using volunteers, wheat crackers and several sample dips. They found that three to six double dips transferred about 10,000 bacteria from an eater's mouth to the remaining dip sample.
