AREA 9 E-LINE NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2007

Dear Area 9 Affiliates,
Spring has arrived and this semester is nearing an end! I hope that each and every one of you are having a wonderful school semester thus far!! We held our 25th Area 9 Conference in Tallahassee, FL on February 16th and 17th! It was a huge success and we had an awesome time!

We had over 150 people to attend this year's 25th Area 9 Conference!  Molly Jones and Joseph Fasullo from the University of Miami received the Outstanding Peer Educator award.  Clemson University in South Carolina received the Outstanding Program award. Outstanding Chapter was awarded to Berry College in Georgia.  Amanda Mitchell from the University of Tampa received the Hall of Fame Award.  I would like to congratulate and thank all award recipients for a job well done!

A special thanks goes to the Area 9 Leadership Team: Area Consultant-Bob Ruday and State Coordinators: Miriam Nicklaus-Florida, Alma Keita-Georgia, and Parvin Lewis-South Carolina. I would also like to thank Florida State University's Dan Moore and his awesome students for all of their hard work in planning the local arrangements for the conference! Last, but not least, I would like to thank Tara Daniel, Area 8 SAC and Kyle Ali, Student Trustee for their hard work and participation at the conference!!!!

General Assembly will be here before you know it! I would love to see each and every one of you there in attendance!! We understand that getting to GA can be expensive, but it's that time of year to start thinking about fundraising for the General Assembly! Here are some ideas:
  • Hold a bake sale
  • Auction off date packages
  • Ask Student Government or other organizations for money
  • Ask for donations from local businesses
  • Work at a professional sporting event
  • Hold a non-alcoholic event
  • Have a car wash
  • Host an auction- ask students, faculty, staff,or local businesses for donations
  • Sell mocktails
  • Ask alumni for donations

Have a plan for your fundraising efforts. Know the fundraising rules and regulations on your campus. This will give you a framework from which to start your fundraising efforts. Develop a "sales pitch" for local businesses when they ask what you are planning on doing with the money you raise. Be assertive and polite! Good luck and hope to see you in Atlanta, GA!

To Area 9:

Thank you very much for allowing me to again serve as the Area 9 Area Consultant for these past years.  The 2007 Area Conference, which was a "sell out" was my last in this position.  I value all of the students and staff who have worked with me in my position.  I especially want to thank the state coordinators: Parvin Lewis from Clemson, South Carolina; Alma Keita from Georgia Southwestern University; and especially Miriam Nicklaus from Tallahassee Community College.  Miriam has been giving so much of her time and has served as the Area Conference Coordinator.  Thanks also to Parvin and Alma for their assistance in also working on the CPE training, the awards speakers and all around consul about the many facets of planning a conference.

I have met some very special students through the BACCHUS SAC program.  Their assistance with the conference and the area newsletters has been greatly appreciated.  Every SAC has been a joy to work with and has been a wonderful addition to our Area Leadership Team!

Thanks again for giving me the opportunity to serve you.  Please keep peer education in the forefront of your efforts.

There really is no better program to affect student lives.

-Bob Ruday

"In the United States, automobile deaths are the leading cause of death
for all people age 3 to 33. When youth are given the privilege to drive
they are handed the keys to their safety of those riding with them and
the others on the road. Safety is not an accident; youth can take
specific actions to be safer as drivers and passengers.

A sign for safety is a sign of your commitment to the future of
America's youth. Sign For Safety challenges you to challenge your

MIGRAINE: NOT JUST A BAD HEADACHE
There are headaches, and then there are migraine headaches. Any headache can make you miserable, but a migraine can be excruciating. In fact, the most severe migraine headaches can just about bring you to your knees.

Charter Renewals are PAST DUE

Has your affiliate submitted their completed charter renewal?  As of this date, 15 affiliates in Florida have NOT returned their charter renewal.  Are you one of the missing 15?  If so, please do your part by renewing TODAY!  It will only take a few minutes of your time.

Go to www.bacchusnetwork.org, click on RENEWAL and the form will appear.  Complete the form and click on submit.

This process if very important to the BACCHUS Network as it verifies the number of affiliates and peer educators and gives an overview of the programs being offered.  This information provides helpful information the National Office uses to raise the money needed to support your organization and promote the organization.

FLORIDA AFFILIATES:  There are two requirements you need to fulfill in order to continue receiving materials from the Florida Peer Education office.

  1. A completed charter renewal on file at the BACCHUS National office.
  2. A Year in Review survey.  I will send this survey out in the next couple of weeks.  This survey is required by the grant from the Florida Department of Transportation.

Your renewal helps the BACCHUS Network and the Florida Peer Education office grow and serve you.  Thank you for your time!

National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) has designated May as
National Youth Traffic Safety Month.  This is an important time for peer educators to focus on driving safety.

To support National Youth Traffic Safety Month, Allstate is awarding $1,000 to 50 local youth organizations for their youth developed and implemented projects that demonstrate a strong focus geared towards youth traffic safety.

Registration Deadline is May 31, 2007 AND you must respond to a follow up e-mail by June 1, 2007 to complete your registration.  For complete information go to
