Letter to the Editor
Hello from New York

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the first Bacchus Area 11 Newsletter of 2007! My name is Brandon Collins and I am a currently a junior at St. John's University in Jamaica, New York. I am majoring in Adolescent Education with my concentration focus as English. During the National Bacchus Conference which took place back in November in Anaheim, California I was elected to be this year's Area 11 SAC. I took this responsibility with the same determination and enthusiasm that I have right now and I am very excited to begin working closely with many of you in developing strong networks within our area and building a community full of support and focus.

The Bacchus Network has a philosophy that I greatly agree with which is that students on various college campuses around the country can play a uniquely effective role in encouraging their peers to consider, talk honestly about and develop responsible habits and attitudes toward high-risk health and safety issues. As young individuals who have a great amount of influence over our peers because of our roles as leaders, we must work together to help expand the Bacchus Network's mission and find new inventive ways of giving college students valuable, relevant information about various health and wellness issues that could help them make better decisions.

In March, we will be having our Area 11 Conference and I could not emphasize how important it is to attend this weekend conference. It will be a great opportunity for me to meet you all and share the different ideas and thoughts we all have on our various Bacchus programs and the positive and even in some cases, negative influences our program has on our college campuses.

In any case, whether you can make it to the conference or not, I would love to be able to meet and talk to as many of Bacchus students within Area 11 as possible. I am very open to new ideas and thoughts about how we can make our area stronger in regards to networking and communication.

I look forward to shaping Area 11 into a very well-developed network between New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and learning more about the Bacchus program and the different ways students within our area represent it on their college campuses. If you have any questions or would simply like to send me a quick email saying, "Hello", please do not hesitate to email me at: area11sac@bacchusnetwork.org.

National News:
College implements Safe Ride Program
By Casey Peacock
PNT Staff Writer

shuttleEastern New Mexico University has implemented a Safe Ride program in an attempt to curtail students from driving under the influence of alcohol.

A student-run transportation program, the service is available 24 hours a day seven days a week to students, student body president Steven Frost said. There are male and female drivers at all times.

"The ultimate goal is to save lives and prevent heartaches," Frost said.
"When a student is at a party and has a couple drinks, they are over the legal limit. When they drive home, there are penalties, whether it is a DWI, or someone's life. The consequences are just not worth it. With this program students can avoid them."

In 2005, 2.8 million college students drove while under the influence of alcohol, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

"This last semester we lost several students to alcohol-related deaths. It is a problem that affects us all; ASENMU had the opportunity to do something about it, so we took action," Frost said.

ENMU senior Autumn Gonzales said ENMU has become diligent about cracking down on the amount of drinking that students participate in.

"When I started college four years ago, it wasn't as strict," Gonzales said.
Freshman Cheyenne Lattin concurred with Gonzales, saying some of the fraternity parties she has attended have checked for IDs and require underage attendees to be identified with a mark, she said.

"They (the fraternities) don't condone underage drinking," Lattin said.

On the Friday before St. Patrick's Day, ENMU groups will host the Save-A-Life tour. A national tour that targets the dangers of driving while under the influence, students will have the opportunity to enter a simulator that imitates under-the-influence driving conditions, Frost said.

The dangers of binge drinking and what signs to look for when a person has had to much to drink will also be discussed.

Plans are also in the works to not only present the program to ENMU students but area high school students, Frost said.

"I feel we don't have a major problem on campus, but we want to take steps to prevent it. We care about the students," Frost said.

The program is not specifically for intoxicated students, but for any student in an unsafe situation that needs a ride home.

Letter from: Your Student Trustees

Kyle Ali- University of Missouri Columbia
Sam Filkins- Baldwin Wallace College

The spring season represents a time of great scholastic and extracurricular productivity within the academic community. With one month of winter left and Area Conferences in the near future, on behalf of the Student Advisory Committee and all of the professionals and volunteers of The BACCHUS network, we would like to extend our best wishes for a successful second semester.

The Student Advisory Committee convened in Denver during winter recess. Following a very productive summit, we are confident that this year will be marked by great progress.

Each spring our 12 areas host a regional conference. Area conferences serve as an open forum for the exchange of a diverse collection of ideas and perspectives on a wide variety of subjects relevant to the causes of network-affiliated organizations. The best and brightest from institutions across your regions will be in attendance. It is our hope that you and your fellow peers will be able to participate in this unique learning experience. If you have an event on your campus that prevents your attendance at your own area conference, you might consider another area conference nearby.

Sexual Responsibility Week 2007 materials are now available. As has been the case for years, BACCHUS is a leader in promoting student-friendly sexual health information, the empowerment of abstinence as a healthy choice, and the connections between alcohol abuse and unhealthy sexual decisions. The purpose of the week is to provide all of our affiliates with a highly visible spark for what we hope is a year round commitment to sexual health issues and programming in your campus community.

Many people like to create their own Sexual Responsibility Week in February around Valentine's Day. Some people like to do their sexual health awareness on the week before Spring Break. Others find it difficult to conduct an entire week of sexual health events, but instead try to do a day or two of programming. As always, we leave it to our affiliates to decide what is best for them.

The opportunities to become more involved in The BACCHUS Network are endless, we hope that you'll seek them out and continue to serve as change agents within your campus community.

Best,
Kyle B. Ali and Sam Filkins

Kyle Ali is a junior at the University of Missouri- Columbia majoring in Political Science. A former SAC member (Area 5), he is also active in the Office of Leadership Development on his campus.

Sam Filkins is a junior Communications/Psychology major at Baldwin Wallace College. A former SAC member (Area 7), he currently serves as student body president of his institution.
