A "Hello" from your new Area 1 SAC
Hello Area 1!                            angie
My name is Lisa Vu and I am your new BACCHUS Network SAC representative for Area 1 for 2007-08! I am a Junior at the University of Washington-Seattle (Go Huskies!), and I am double majoring in Communication and Psychology. Along with peer educating, I also volunteer with preschool children at the Experimental Education Unit on my campus.

At my university, I am involved in a peer health education group called UHELP (University Health Education Leadership Program). I am proud to part of a group like UHELP, which gets involved in many ways throughout campus such as giving presentations, producing a quarterly newsletter, and attending and putting on many health events on campus throughout the year.

I am very excited and proud to be part of this year's BACCHUS Network student advisory committee. There are so many things I looking forward to working on and so many people I look forward to working with this year. One of the events I look forward to most this year is the Area 1 Regional conference which will take place April 4-5th in Spokane, WA. The theme will be "Wellness for Life: Empowering the Mind, Body and Spirit". I really encourage you to make it, and I look forward to meeting you.

A Word From the Area 1 Consultant
By Mark Shaw, Univeristy of Washington

Hello from your "Area 1 AC" (Area Consultant).  One of our goals in this region
for 2008 is to expand the number of BACCHUS affiliates, so that more students can be involved in (and their peers benefit from) peer education.  Right now, we are aware of some schools that are doing peer education, but are
not affiliates.  Like 'the best things in life,' joining BACCHUS is FREE!  To do so, if not already a member, please see this link:
http://www.bacchusgamma.org/join.asp

Another pursuit we're embarking on this year is to have student state representatives working along side the state coordinators for AK, ID, OR, and WA.  Lisa, our SAC, will be telling you elsewhere in this newsletter who these extra-dedicated volunteers are, and we look forward to seeing what their discussions lead to.

I will be leading the Certified Peer Educator Training at the Area 1 conference, which would be of particular benefit to new BACCHUS affiliates who have not had their peer educators formally trained.  If you have any questions about that event, feel free to contact me.

Hope to see you in Spokane!

A Word From the Student Trustees

By Tara Daniel and Chance Dorland
Student Trustees

This upcoming spring season is one of renewal, and as an affiliate of The BACCHUS Network, you have opportunities to engage your peer education organization in this rejuvenation.

The BACCHUS Network exists to provide resources for peer educators to start and re-energizeactivities on hundreds of campuses.

Each spring, The BACCHUS Network hosts twelve area conferences across the country with hundreds in attendance.  Through networking with other peer educators and health professionals, presenting information from your campus experience, and hearing speakers, affiliates have a chance to celebrate their successes as well as strengthen their visions.

Meeting with other peer educators is only one opportunity offered by BACCHUS this spring. Two campus campaigns are now available, free of charge, to all affiliated campus programs. The first-ever national Promoting Mental Health Campaign jumpstarts an entirely new era of wellness promotion, and The Sexual Responsibility Week materials reflect our continuing tradition of sexual health promotion. Each campaign contains not only samples of promotional items for your campaign, but also a booklet of information and ideas that can be tailored to individual campus and peer group situations.

BACCHUS recognizes that your campus is unique, which is why these resources are only the beginning. Take these ideas, and in the spirit of spring, make them grow. In turn, tell us about your peer education program with your charter renewal. This form is your opportunity to express what resources your campus uses, would like to receive, and how you've improved on our designs.

The Student Advisory Committee and Student Trustees extend their best wishes for your success this spring. Indeed, the Student Advisory Committee is simply another resource for your peer education progress, so connect with your SAC representative to find out more regarding what BACCHUS can do for you.

Sincerely,
Tara Daniel and Chance Dorland

(CNN) -- Close your eyes for a minute and envision all the romantic parts of the human body.

Her beautiful eyes. His strong shoulders. We'll stop there, but you go right ahead and think about all the body parts you want.

Bet you didn't think about the caudate and the ventral tegmental areas, did you?

These areas of the brain, while little known to most people, are helping scientists explain the physiological reasons behind why we feel what we feel when we fall in love.

By studying MRI brain scans of people newly in love, scientists are learning a lot about the science of love: Why love is so powerful, and why being rejected is so horribly painful.
